There are certain creatures that we may come across in the wild and if we ever do, we are fortunate if we survive the experience. Many of us would consider that if we happened to come across a lion and fortunately, it is a rare or perhaps even impossible event for the majority of us.
Although it certainly is true that lions are to be respected and even feared, they may also have a surprise up their sleeve every now and again. They may be counted as the “King of the jungle” and they strike fear into the hearts of both humans and other animals but they still have a heart of their own. That is what this wildlife photographer happened to see and fortunately, he was able to capture it all for us to view as well.
Photographers have always had a rather unique advantage when compared to other people. They often find themselves in situations where it is worth taking a picture but they also have the wherewithal to do it, even when things get difficult. This wildlife photographer certainly saw something that was difficult and it was also quite charming when the true story unfolded in front of him.
At first, it seemed as if this lioness was just going to take care of things naturally when she came across an injured baby fox. The situation changed rather quickly, however, in the most amazing way possible.
The female lion happened upon the injured little fox that was unprotected and lying on the edge of the road.
This type of fox is often a target of larger predators so you can only imagine how frightened it was.
Things were not looking any better when suddenly a male lion showed up. It was obvious that this little fox was an easy prey.
Other lion cubs also came up to see what was happening.
“When we arrived, there were several lions surrounding a baby fox, who apparently had injured her spine – she had difficulty to stand on its hind legs,” nature photographer Graham Dyer told Barcroft TV.
Male lions don’t often participate in the hunt but this one decided to make an attempt.
It was ready to attack
The lioness had some maternal instincts, however, and she let them show.
She protected the baby fox
The male lion was persistent but she would not leave the side of this little fox
She even showed the fox how serious she was about protecting him
The male lion was not happy but he did leave them alone.
The lioness returned to her cubs and the fox wandered off safe
Obviously, things aren’t always as they seem on the surface.
