New Law: Animal Abusers Will Now Be Registered Just Like Sex Offenders

Although there are many atrocities that happen in the world today, one that typically takes us by surprise is when animal abuse takes place. They are among the most innocent creatures on earth and many of us who own animals recognize exactly how much they can mean to a human. It is unthinkable that abuse would take place, but it happens far too often to even think about.

Fortunately, there is some light on the horizon and that comes in the form of a new law that is being taken up by more and more jurisdictions. It is directly related to animal abuse and in the United States, these laws require that the name of the animal abuser will be displayed in a searchable registry. It is similar to the type of registry that is used for sex offenders.

The primary reason why these registries are being used is to keep people who have harmed animals from having the opportunity to do so again. It is unfortunate, but true, that without these types of registries in place, the former offenders could just go get another pet at any time they wanted. After they are listed in these registries, however, it would be practically impossible for any of them to get another pet, because there is an affidavit that must be signed before a pet is adopted.

These registries are also a benefit if you’re looking for a pet sitter because they can help you to avoid those who have harmed animals in the past. It certainly goes a long way in helping you do your research.

Although the registries are not yet required in every state, they are becoming more and more popular.

For those of us who think of our pets as family members, we welcome this news. Perhaps the individuals who would think about harming an animal would reconsider if they knew that their information would be easily searchable.
