Being a part of a loving family is a very special thing but at times, we hear about families that don’t have that special bond and at times, it can even be shocking when we see how they react to each other. There are also times when situations in life may leave us wondering how we could be in the situation were in. When those things occur with the family, it can either bring us closer together or it can tear us apart. That is where this family comes in.
Within this family was a man who was raising a girl that he thought was his biological daughter. He had been raising her since birth and now that she was six years old, he discovered that he wasn’t actually the father at all. There was a lot of drama that was attached to it but the uncle decided that he would step in and take care of the situation. He then went on Reddit to see how people felt about the situation and to get some advice because he is in a very difficult situation.
He said: “Over a year ago my brother found out my niece — who was 6 at the time — was not his biological daughter. Something his b—- of an ex girlfriend had lied to him about.” He then said that when his brother found out about it, he “basically cut of[f] all contact with his ex and my niece. Moved out of their shared apartment and refused to have anything else to do with them.”
He admitted to having mixed feelings on the situation but then went on to say that he wasn’t the one that was cheated on or lied to so he couldn’t fully comprehend what was happening. He decided that the best thing to do would be to step up to the plate to keep the little girl from paying for the sins of others.
“So basically the only family my niece knew her entire life were not involved anymore,” he shared with Reddit. “It didn’t feel right for me to do that too. I’ve loved my niece since the day she was born. I’m her godfather and everything, even if we’re not biologically related the idea of not being in her life anymore hurt.”
“I stuck around,” he wrote. “My brother was always against me still being involved but in the end it became one of those things we don’t have a problem with as long as we don’t talk about it. Even if I hated having to interact with her mom, I still got to spend time with my niece and take her out. Before all this happened, my niece’s mom has been struggling with health problems and now we’re learning that her time is limited. She herself has no other family so she’s asking if I’d take over as my niece’s legal guardian once she’s not here anymore. We haven’t started the legal process yet but I’ve already agreed I’ll take care of her.”
“My parents are completely against this since it means my niece will be in my life permanently and I’d be an awful person for putting my brother in that kind of position,” he wrote.
“I’d never force them to meet but it does mean from now on I’d have to keep distance from him since he still wants nothing to do with her,” he continued. “My brother found out about this too and he’s furious. I’ve gotten an earful from him about how I’m the worst brother ever, and a selfish s— for taking in the one person he wants no involvement with.”
He was shocked by the level of hate that he received from his family and doesn’t know what to do. He said: “I really can’t see myself not taking her in because it’s either me or foster care. So when he gave me that ultimatum, him or her, I ended up going for her.”
People were understandably upset about what was going on and they had opinions in both directions. Perhaps the opinion that was agreed upon the most was in favor of the little girl, who was innocent in the entire situation.
