When a couple finds out they are expecting triplets, it is a joyous occasion. For Becki-Jo Allen, a 23-year-old mother to be, however, it was a stunning realization.
She had the surprise of finding out she was having triplets but when she gave birth, she had a surprise that nobody could have prepared for. She gave birth to 3 baby boys, but it turns out that they are identical triplets. This is something that is exceptionally rare and the odds? One is 200 million!
When Liam Tierney and Becki-Jo Allen found out that they were pregnant, they informed their daughter, Indiana that she was about to become a big sister.
The couple, who live in the area of Liverpool, England had considered having more children but they weren’t expecting to have as many as they did. Then they say the ultrasound.
Wen Becki-Jo was still in the early part of her pregnancy she began suffering from severe headaches. An early ultrasound was scheduled and the doctors broke the news to her about the triplets.
“It was the biggest shock of my life! We haven’t got any triplets in the family so it came completely out of the blue,” Becki-Jo said.
The boys are named Roman, Rohan and Rocco and they were delivered during the 31st week of pregnancy via C section. The boys spent the first 6 weeks of their life in intensive care, because they only weighed about 3 pounds, 5 ounces.
Having triplets often causes some serious complications and to have all babies survive is rare.
All of the boys gained weight and after being in the hospital for a month and a half, they were ready to go home.
A DNA test was conducted and it was discovered that these three boy are genetically identical.
The birth of triplets is not uncommon and with in vitro fertilization and other types of fertility treatment, it is happening often. Identical triplets, however, are quite rare.
In order for this to happen, the egg must split in 2 very early in the pregnancy and then one of those eggs must split again. It is so rare that only 4 sets of identical triplets were born in the United States in 2015.
Amazingly, Becki-Jo is able to tell the children apart without a problem.
“It’s only when they’re asleep that they look the same to me. But they all have completely different personalities. And they’ve all got dark birthmarks between their eyebrows, but Roman’s is slightly darker than the others, and Rohan has got a birthmark on his leg as well,” Becki-Jo said.
They use about 130 diapers and 5 packs of wipes every week. You could imagine that the parents are very busy.
Their 6-year-old sister seems to love her little brothers.
“Indiana loves them. She’s not one bit jealous. I do feel a bit sorry for her when I think what it’s going to be like growing up with three little brothers though!” said Becki-Jo.
These little guys deserve all of the attention they get.
