If there is one thing that is true about history, it’s the fact that things are constantly changing. We often see this in ancient history, and people certainly did live different lines back then. Even in more modern times, however, there have been some changes that often take people by surprise when they hear about them. The history of this machine is rather interesting.
“The first U.S. patent for a permanent wave machine was given to Marjorie Joyner in 1928. Joyner, an African-American woman who graduated from a predominantly Caucasian beauty school, lived in Chicago and owned a beauty salon,” The State Museum of Pennsylvania shares on its website.
You can look at the video clip below to see what it was like to get your hair permed with one of these devices. It certainly was more involved than what people have to go through today.
Some women would have to spend half a day in the salon while people worked on their hair. It was also dangerous and many people were burned with it.
Today, getting a perm is not very intimidating. A chemical process is used and there is no electrical heating required. You can also move around the room while it is taking place.
