I’ve never had my own children, and to be honest, becoming a parent wasn’t something I ever really felt like I needed. I’ve always loved kids and I have a brother who is 15 years younger than I am, but I never felt the need to reproduce myself so that my “genes” carry on. When I met my wife, she already had two children of her own and did not want more, so I became a stepfather. To my surprise, I really enjoyed being a loving stepparent to my stepchildren. I loved having a family and I can’t even imagine I could love my biological children any more than I love my two stepchildren.
Stepparents sometimes get a bad rap, but there are a lot of loving stepparents who don’t get the credit they deserve from their stepchildren. We too often hear the bad stories in the news, and less frequently hear about the stories of people who get up every day and parent children who don’t belong to them genetically. One famous stepdad is the actor Kurt Russell, who has been in a long relationship with actor Goldie Hawn for decades. The two have raised a blended family of “yours, mine, and ours” together, and one of their most famous children is the actress Kate Hudson. In fact, Kate and her brother, Oliver, consider Kurt to be their father in every way that matters.
Kate and Oliver are estranged from their biological father, Bill Hudson, and it has been a painful relationship over the years. Oliver days Hudson is a dad who abandoned his children, and Hudson has even requested that Kate and Oliver, his biological children, no longer use his surname since they seem to be so devoted to Kurt Russell. Kate has been frequently known to sing her stepfather’s praises. Here is a post she put up on Instagram for Russell’s birthday.
Below, you can watch a video of Kate discussing her relationship with her biological father and Kurt on the Howard Stern Show.
