Ron Williams is the 84-year-old U.S. Army Veteran who’s found one more reason to love his cat, Fluffy, after his furry companion saved his life.
A few years ago, a friend dropped by to visit Ron, bringing a special surprise for the retiree — Fluffy’s male cat.
“I looked at him and hey, I just fell in love with him,” Ron said. [1]
Ron and Fluffy became best friends immediately. But, no one realized then just how Fluffy would prove to be much more than just a furry companion. The cat soon becomes Ron’s hero after saving his life!
A Horrible Fall
One day, Ron fell while stepping out of the shower. What happened next proved to be the perfect storm of calamities that normally would make for a much different kind of story.
To begin, the 84-year-old vet was completely alone at home, with the exception of Fluffy. He also landed in a dangerous position which completely immobilized him. Ron could not move, and he also had his life alert device on the charger in the other room. And while the man’s phone was also in the bathroom, it was on the counter, out of reach.
“My arm was pinned under me, and the hours kept going by,” he explained.
Ron had little choice but to wait on the cold floor in agony, praying and hoping that someone would discover his situation before it was too late.
Fluffy to the Rescue
When Fluffy began living with Ron, the man would spend a lot of his days narrating his new friend’s adventures.
“The phone would ring, and I would say ‘ring-a-ding’,” he explained.
Ron was lying on his bathroom floor from 8 am until midnight. Fortunately, he had Fluffy to keep him company, but the cat would eventually do much more than that!
As the day dragged on, Ron’s situation was looking pretty grim. That’s when the elderly veteran turned to his cat out of desperation.
“I said ‘ring-a-ding Fluffy, you’re my only hope’,” Ron recalls. “And he was. It wasn’t even five minutes later I felt something hit my hand. And I’m here because of it.”
The “something” he was referring to was a cell phone. From all the time when Ron sang “ring-a-ding” to Fuffy, he’d been receiving a call. The cat connected that specific phrase to the device. And when Ron said those words during his most desperate hour, the smart kitty jumped up and brought his friend the phone just in the nick of time!
“I relive it a million times,” the 84-year-old says. “What if he wouldn’t have been in there with me? I’d be dead today,”
Thanks to Fluffy’s heroic actions, Run survived his fall with only a few minor bruises and bumps. And the two friends have since enjoyed a closer bond than ever before.
“He’s my hero, and he always will be,” Ron said. “He’ll never be away from me until the day I die.”
