If Square Waves Form On The Water’s Surface Keep Away And Warn Others

The ocean can be a very beautiful place. There is just something about sitting on the shore and looking out across the vast sea in front of you that just fills your mind with wonder. Being out on the ocean is also very exciting because the tranquil waters can be so peaceful and the beauty just seems to be in every direction. Some people will save all year to take a trip to the ocean for vacation and although there is a lot of beauty, there are some hazards to be concerned with as well.

Some hazards are discussed regularly, such as rip tides but there is one hazard that is often not discussed. It is known as ‘square waves’ which is a natural phenomenon that is also called cross sea. It is mesmerizing to watch but it is extremely dangerous if you are caught in it. This includes boats, surfers and swimmers.

When you see this ocean phenomenon, it is absolutely beautiful. Just be happy, however, if you are seeing it from a distance. It happens when waves collide from different directions and they form squares in the water. You can see this image from Île de Ré, an island off the west coast of France where it is a common occurrence.

It occurs when waves from one weather system continue to move in that direction, even though the wind has changed and creates waves in a different direction. They run in an angle from each other and it causes this view.

People get curious when they see something this unusual but there is a lot of danger to be aware of. What is underneath this amazing sight are strong currents that can throw anything up in the air, including large ships.

That is why experts warn that you should stay away from any square waves that you see. It has caused capsized vessels and could easily drown someone who is swimming and caught in the phenomenon.

When you see this, stay out of the ocean and warn others to stay away as well. Enjoy the view from far off or even better, enjoy it in this beautiful video:
