It seems that American gymnast Simone Biles is ready for the Tokyo Olympics. At the U.S. Olympic Trials last Friday night, Biles soared (literally) to a commanding lead to earn a spot on the team next month. She did a double-double dismount that has been named for her, a move that she’s kept under wraps since the world championships in 2019. Even skipping a difficult double-pile vault she showed in a competition last month, she still posted the event’s top score last Friday. In her floor exercise, she was very controlled and absolutely spectacular and said that she was “super excited” going into the trials last Friday.
Many of Biles’ competitors got back into competition following a break during the pandemic, and that includes her teammates Sunisa lee and Jordan Chiles. Biles made history in 2019 at the U.S. Women’s Olympic Gymnastics Championship when she got the record for being the first woman to ever do a triple-double during a competition. A triple-double means that she does two full flips and then three full twists in one jump before landing on the floor. Biles flawlessly performed her historic move when she was doing her floor routine’s tumbling pass. She stunned the judges and audience with the move.
Simone Biles is the most decorated American gymnast in history, and at 23, she has won a total of 30 World Championship and Olympic medals. At the Summer Olympics in 2016, Simone led the U.S. team called “The Final Five” to a huge victory. She herself got a gold medal in the floor exercise, vault, and the individual all-around. Moreover, she also won the bronze medal in the category of the balance beam. The young lady is also an author, and she wrote the book “Courage to Soar” with Michelle Burford and Mary Lou Retton.
